چکیده

Purpose To explore the differential effects of age and eccentricity on perception motion at photopic mesopic light levels. Methods Thirty-six visually normal participants (18 younger; mean 25 years, range: 20–31) older; 70 60–79) underwent two testing sessions, one In each session, was tested binocularly eccentricities (centrally, peripherally 15° rightwards 5° superior to horizontal) for four tasks: minimum contrast a drifting Gabor identify direction (motion contrast); translational global coherence; biological embedded in noise duration high-contrast determine motion, using sizes measure spatial surround suppression motion. Results There significant main effect condition (higher thresholds mesopic) (p < 0.001), = 0.001) 0.001); older adults) 0.04) peripherally) 0.001). Additionally, we found three-way interaction between levels, (similar increase centrally both groups, but much larger deterioration adult’s peripheral thresholds, p 0.02). Finally, two-way values central relative photopic, Conclusions For majority tasks assessed, reduced conditions, similar extent groups. However, because some adults exhibited elevated even under particularly periphery, ability detect moving stimuli high markedly impaired individuals. Our results imply age-related differences detection night that might impact hazard avoidance driving ability.

Motion perception at scotopic light levels.

Although the spatial and temporal properties of rod-mediated vision have been extensively characterized, little is known about scotopic motion perception. To provide such information, we determined thresholds for the detection and identification of the direction of motion of sinusoidal grating patches moving at speeds from 1 to 32 deg/s, under scotopic light levels, in four different types of o...

Motion processing at low light levels: Differential effects on the perception of specific motion types.

While many aspects of human vision at low light levels have been studied in great detail, motion perception has rarely been investigated so far. Here we address differential effects of light level on the perception of coherent motion, heading from radial flow, and biological motion. We determined detection thresholds under photopic, mesopic, and scotopic conditions. Results indicate that the pe...

Driving in Snow: Effect of Headlamp Color at Mesopic and Photopic Light Levels

Many individuals believe that yellow headlights are preferable to white headlights when driving at night during a snowfall. Although evidence exists to support the claim that yellow light can be perceived as less “glaring” or “distracting” than white light of equal luminance, it is not clear whether backscattered light of different colors are differentially effective for driver comfort or for d...

Effects of depth, eccentricity and size of additional static stimulus on visually induced self-motion perception

Static visual stimulus presented behind a moving pattern inhibits vection. On the other hand, the same static stimulus facilitates vection if it is located in front of the moving pattern. In this study, the effects of depth, eccentricity and size of the additional static stimulus on inhibition and facilitation of horizontal linear vection were investigated. Results indicated that both inhibitio...
